US EPA Grant

The City of Reading is pleased to announce that it has received a new financial incentive to help local businesses, and funds are now available for project deployment.

A total of $400,000 in grant funds were awarded by US EPA for assessment of sites within the City to facilitate expansion and/or redevelopment. These funds will be used to inventory and investigate the historic uses of brownfield properties; determine the presence, type, severity, and extent of contamination where detected; and develop remedial alternatives that will allow for safe and viable reuse of the properties. The funds also allow the City to develop cleanup plans, conduct health monitoring, and provide public outreach to offer an opportunity for stakeholders to provide input and encourage the identification, remediation, and redevelopment of contaminated properties. This effort will be directed by City of Reading staff and will be conducted through September 2019. EPA’s Brownfields Program is designed to empower states, communities, and other stakeholders in economic redevelopment to work together in a timely manner to prevent, assess, safely clean up, and sustainably reuse brownfields.
