City of Reading Job Notification
Service Department Maintenance Worker
The city of Reading will be accepting applications for full time Maintenance Worker until 12/8/2023 until 4PM in the general offices at City Hall. A Civil Service exam will be given for the position on 12/16/2023 at 9am at city hall. Applications are available at city general office at 1000 Market St. open M-F 9am-4pm or can be downloaded HERE.
JOB DESCRIPTION: Maintenance Worker
Basic knowledge of general maintenance procedures in the following areas: plumbing, carpentry, masonry and electricity. Skill in use of hand-held power tools and light trucks. Ability to read and follow building plans and sketches. Knowledge, skills and abilities may be demonstrated through a combination of experience and training. A valid driver’s license is required for this position. A Class B airbrake CDL will be required after a one-year probationary period. The city of Reading will assist in obtaining a CDL.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES:
Examples - install siding, fix roof leaks, re-shingle roofs, remodel offices, respond to public service emergencies such as water main breaks or water distribution problems, snow removal from streets using dump trucks with plow equipment, general street maintenance, storm drain maintenance, mow grass, leaf collection, brush pick-up, etc.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Visual inspection and repair of equipment that is not easy to access. Climbing open or restricted stairways, ladders, climbing around pipes in tight spaces, walking through difficult spaces , etc. Ability to remove barriers to access equipment in need of repair. Ability to lift heavy objects such as concrete block, pipe, branches, logs, etc.
EXAM INFORMATION:
Exam will consist of 60 questions covering the following: Ability to read, understand and follow safety directions. Knowledge of safety practices and use of personal protective equipment. Basic math skills. Mechanical ability
A score of 70% or greater is required for consideration for employment. The top 10 scoring applicants will be contacted for in-person interviews. All applicants will be subject to a background check.
Applicants will be required to take a pre-employment drug screen. The city is an EOE.
